With The Hobbit coming to our screens there is bound to be a game spin off as with most BIG movie releases and they do not come much bigger than The Hobbit. Surely aside from the Avengers and possibly Batman this is the most highly anticiapted film release of this century so far.
With War in the North doing ok struggling against huge competition such as Modern Warfare, BattleField and the similar fantasy status of SkyRim it leaves you wondering who will make the game and if it will be any good. Previous incarnation The Hobbit Game 2003 was poor. I know it was a while ago and things have come on but there was some class platformers at that time and this was not one of them.
Many Movie based games  rely on hype from the movie to sell the games instead of relying on the game being good enough to sell itself. I perchased Iron Man for my son as he loved the movie as did I but the game was average at best and not worth the £40 ($64) I paid for it.
Apart from WITN and the Online MMO LOTRO there are not many Tolkien based for you to get your teeth into so I hope no pray that they do justice to The Hobbit and tag a decent game to it, the content is there, if not I always have Table Top (MERP) remember if you need any advice on gaming contact me via Twitter @Merpers and @RealMcRicky.

The 2003 Hobbit was probably not one of the best games ever made, but I thought it was decent. I loved the style, it had a lot of charm to it, and I enjoyed the puzzles; it also has some of the BEST Middle-earth inspired music I have ever heard–that, if anything, was its strongest point. I think it deserves more credit than it gets, and while not great perhaps, I would say it’s one of the better LotR games to have come out.
It’s better than movie-based games, certainly. The problem with those, as you say, is that they rely on the hype of the film for sales, and severely suffer in quality for it. The developers working on film-based games are typically given only a year to work on them (as opposed to the average of 3 years) and are pressured to release them by the time of the film. I can’t imagine the upcoming Hobbit game will be much different from EA’s Two Towers or Return of the King: a linear, button-mashing hack-n-slash fest. It’s probably needless to say that I think it won’t be as good as of The Hobbit from 2003. That at least had more going for it.
As a die hard fan of Tolkien i was disapointed by it, as with most of the LOTR spin offs. As you say the hack n slash element quickly becomes boring. There have been some decent movie games but like i said mostly disapointing. I think the 2003 Hobbit was poor compared to some of the games around at that time indeed the music may have been fitting but not enough to base the sale of a game on, but we all have our own opinions. Valid points made though Ian thanks for the feedback
I think it could be a great opportunity to re-release the game with updated graphics, gameplay and quests.
