Tonight, during The Founders Inklings, an eloquent and impassioned statement, a plea for action to “Save the Shire“, was read on behalf of all the founders and has started the ball rolling on what all the founders see as taking a necessary stand.
As always the founders speak as fans, but tonight was less about admiration for Professor Tolkien’s works than for the principles espoused within them. As the founders explained “Professor Tolkien wrote from his roots and his beliefs about perseverance, courage, and the important things in life,” and it is from such motivations that the decision to act in defence of those who have come under the scrutiny of Saul Zaentz Company was born.
By instructing trademark attorney Aaron Hall to intervene on behalf of Wendy, Rosy and Steve in pursuit of an amicable resolution, as well as seeking to “Save the Shire” from being trademarked by the company, Middle-earth Network is taking a stand for fairness and responsibility. It is done in invitation to Saul Zaentz Company to act with the same fairness and responsibility to all – with respect for the works and legacy of Professor Tolkien’s own quest to create a “Mythology for England”, with respect for the inheritors of that legacy, and with respect for the legions of fans far beyond the borders of England whose lives have been touched permanently by those same works.
Middle-earth Network was created by fans, for fans and for this stand to make a difference the founders invite all fans to stand with them. You, your friends, their friends – everyone can help to spread awareness about the action that is being taken for all the fans and the reasons behind it all. YOU really can help “Save the Shire” by spreading the word to everyone you know. If the battle for Middle-earth has begun then all the free peoples will be needed to ensure the best outcome for all.
