House of Fëanor – The Book – Q&A with Hungarian Artist Hemhet!

If you’re not familiar with Deviant Art, it is a site that allows artists, writers and such an outlet to post their work for the world to see. Some of the art on there is great, but every once in a while something amazing catches your eye.

Enter The House of Fëanor – The Book. Made by hand by Deviant Art user Hemhet. This amazing work of art was created from scratch, and each page features a member of the House of Fëanor. When it is folded out, the book ends up in the shape of the Star of the House of Fëanor. I was able to contact Hemhet and have her answer a few questions regarding her artwork. Her art gallery on Deviant Art is featured in many Tolkien-themed art galleries, and some has even been featured on the Hungarian Tolkien Society official website!

Middle-earth News: Your art shows a very heavy Tolkien influence. How did you get into the works of JRR Tolkien?

Hemhet: My roommate in the dormitory was a great fan, and so she told me about him, and I read the books.

MeNews: The House of Feanor book is by far one of my favorite posts on your Deviant Art gallery. What was the inspiration behind it, and how did that piece come to be?

Hemhet: When I was a child, I had some 3D books with move-able pictures: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Tale of the Little Chicken… I don’t remember the name of the illustrator, but I liked these books much. I made the book for the art contest of the Hungarian Tolkien Society in 2010. First I wanted to make The Hobbit, but it would’ve been too many pages and I wouldn’t have been able to finish it before the deadline.

MeNews: Besides art inspired by Tolkien, what are some of your other passions that find their way into your art?

Hemhet: I find antique photographs inspirational. The people in the photos are already dead, usually lost their name; they have only a face and an untold story.

MeNews: Looking at your gallery, it also looks like you do more than paint. You have some very lovely photographs as well as some beautiful glass paintings. What is your favorite style to use, and why?

Hemhet: My favourite style is graphics. Painting is faster, but with a pencil I can make more detailed works.

MeNews: Alot of your LotR based art is on the content of The Silmarillion, what is your favorite part of the Mythology?

Hemhet: I like the part where Fingon is searching for Meadhros, the duel between Finrod and Sauron, the story of Beren and Lúthien, and I like…I like the whole book.

MeNews: Were there any artists that have influenced you over the years?

Hemhet: I had an art teacher in High School. I learned a lot about techniques and styles from him.

MeNews: And finally, is there a gallery/store where anyone can purchase your amazing artwork?

Hemhet: I haven’t set anything up to do so, but if someone is interested in it, they can me write a note in my Deviant Art site.

So go check out the beautiful works done by Hemhet!
