“We do this because I don’t have a desire to look back years from now and say ‘Something could have been done, but it wasn’t, because people chose to remain idle’ “
Mark Ostley’s impassioned and eloquent explanation on Tuesday’s The Founders Inklings as to why Middle-earth Network is opposing the attempts by Saul Zaentz Company to trademark “Shire” was a speech which was full of his belief in the importance and value of the Middle-earth community. It was that belief which culminated in the action being taken against Saul Zaentz Company on behalf of the whole community.
Its very easy to become indignant on behalf of the community. Its very easy to talk about doing something. Its a big step further to actually do something, however, to choose not to remain idle. It may well be a slow process, but the first concrete steps have been taken with the filing the honorary attorney to middle-earth, Aaron Hall, has made with the trademark office. You can now download and read the filing for yourself here.
The legal fight will be a long one, but its a fight the whole community can be a part of. Anything that can be done to make others in the wider fantasy community (and beyond) aware of what is going on can achieve much. We can all stand together and make a difference. If you’re not already a member of Middle-earth Network then join today and add your voice to those who say “No more” to the actions of Saul Zaentz Company.
