Oloris Publishing – ‘Glorious Warriors’ and a call for artists!

Oloris Publishing is an independent publishing house dedicated to exceptional works of fiction and non-fiction that will deeply engage readers across a variety of genres which includes such titles as “Seer: A Wizard’s Journal” by artist Jef Murray.

Glorious Warriors and That Which They Defend: War and Politics in Middle-Earth will be the newest title to be released by Middle-Earth Network friend, Oloris Publishing, early next year.

The book, by Timothy R. Furnish Ph.D., will compare the “real world” analysis to the politics, governments of Elves, Dwarves , and Men in Tolkien’s world of Middle-Earth. Furnish will further look into the fighting modes, tactics and strategies of the many different factions of Middle-Earth including the Free Peoples, Orcs and Men.

Each of these factions and their tactics will be reviewed through case studies of selected battles from the Tolkien books. Not only will this be a unique experience for Tolkien fans but should prove an interesting read for military historians as the author will break down the use of sieges, naval warfare, logistics and command and control of each race and faction.

“Tolkien’s legendarium has been dissected and deconstructed from a myriad of literature-related perspectives: folklore, linguistics, cultural studies and, in the past decade, film criticism, to name but the most prominent. However, considering the supreme importance that politics and war play in the history of Middle-earth, from the First Age to the early Fourth, a book that examines those two closely-related areas is needed—hence, Glorious Warriors and That Which They Defend: War and Politics in the History of Middle-earth. “

To aid Dr. Furnish in this future publication, Oloris Publication is looking for contributing artists specializing in the following areas:

– Conceptual artwork of armour and weaponry
– Depictions of battle scenes
– Cartography

Interested parties are invited to contact the submissions editor at submissions@olorispublishing.com with samples, scans or photographs from their portfolio for consideration, along with a brief description of their previous artistic experience.

  1. This is great news! I was hooked when Dr. Furnish mentioned “Islamic Eschatology” as one of his interests. I’ve long been fascinated by “Catholic Eschatology” for a very long time. I can’t wait for this book!

  2. What kind of style of art are they looking for?

  3. Bugo,
I’d say something that is similar to, but nonetheless distinct from, the movies’ depictions as well as any extant artists’ oeuvre and that can represent heretofore little-illustrated aspects–such as 2nd Age Numenorean warriors, Gondorian naval warships, etc. Does that help?

  4. No worries at all.

What better way to get an answer than from the actual author!

    Welcome to the network!

  5. Bugo,

Yes, I believe realism is preferred…yo7′d be trying to bring to life the actual ships, clothing, armour, weapons, etc.

    Jef

  6. Well, I’ll try to put together some stuff – but I am working on a big job at the moment – even though this is pretty much more up my alley than anything else I do – and besides that my life just got even more…err…crazy.
How long do I have to submit a portfolio of work?
